Today at church was enlightening.
The minister recanted ideas surrounding his underwear
And the prospect of it hanging on the line behind his house.
I found this strangely enlightening. Not everyday you
Find wisdom that includes underwear,
The most practical of clothes items.
We sang hymns in good faith and waited
For the eventual ritual of taking the body and the blood,
And there was no segue into the underwear talk.
It was abrupt, the stuff of science.
We just jumped in and began to examine a world
Not unlike our own, but so very different.
At the end of the sermon the minister
Fell on the ground and spoke in tongues,
Said things we did not understand, but we
Knew that his motives were pure.
He held his Bible and cried tears of joy.
